Prerequisites are posted as part of the course descriptions in the catalog and course schedule. If you were blocked from registration for any of these courses, and you believe you do have the prerequisites, the Math and English faculty are available to talk with you and ensure you will be able to register for the appropriate level class.

Course Placement is based on documented performance through a test result or college course, and for mathematics placement these need to be within three years.  Students with mathematics courses more than three years old are recommended to talk to a Math Placement Advisor. Students with math test scores more than three years old need to re-take the placement test.  In special circumstances, students may be placed with permission of a Math or English Placement Advisor or the instructor of the class section they wish to take. Students who already have a Bachelors Degree are encouraged to discuss their math placement with a Math Placement Advisor.

Placement Tests

ASSET, COMPASS

The COMPASS test is our primary placement test for both math and English. The ASSET test is given by request for those students not comfortable taking the test on the computer.

SAT, ACT

SAT and ACT test scores of any testing date can be used for English placement.

Using course entry codes

Many courses require prerequisites or an instructor's permission to register. In most cases it is the responsibility of the student because the computerized registration system does not check. However, for the classes listed in this web site, the registration database IS programmed to check. When Shoreline CC's computer data show that you meet the prerequisites for a course you are registering for, you will be registered. When this information is not in our database, or you do not automatically meet the prerequisites, you will be blocked. The block can be overridden with a course entry code. A course entry code is a 5-digit number that is - œattached' to the course. Math and English Placement advisors as well as the deans of Science and of Humanities Divisions can review your situation and give you and entry code. In addition, the instructor of the class you wish to take can approve entrance to the class. To use a course entry code:

Additional reasons registration for a class may be blocked are:
