Humanities Division

Welcome
What, exactly, are the humanities? Keep wondering. "Wonder" is the key. Inside "humanities," you see the word "human," so there's a clue. A quick definition, then, of "humanities" would go something like: fields
of learning that explore human creativity and communication.

A study of the humanities invites you to open your perceptions, to investigate human expression, to develop an appreciation for Rococo art and rock-and-roll, Shakespeare and Speilberg, Ella Fitzgerald and F. Scott Fitzgerald, French language and the French Impressionists, George Orwell and Georgia O'Keefe, Alice Walker and T-Bone Walker, Beowulf and Virginia Woolf. The list goes on. But there's more to the humanities than famous names in creativity. At Shoreline Community College you can create: sing, paint, write, speak, sculpt, act, compose, dance.

To perceive, to experience, to understand, to create—that's what the humanities encourage and enable us to do. People who teach in the Humanities Division at SCC would say that we become more human by drawing a portrait, or by going deep into the poetry of Emily Dickinson, or by exploring the ingenious structure of a Mozart symphony. In other words, when we learn about the humanities, we learn what we humans have made, what we're capable of making. We learn to see and experience our lives differently. We learn who we are.

The Humanities Division oversees a wide variety of programs, both university transfer and professional-technical, including English, art, music and more.  We are located in the FOSS Building 5000, on the 3rd floor, (206) 546-4770.  If you have an interest in our programs, please stop by Room 5327 for more information or see your advisor in the Counseling Office in FOSS.
