PUB predictions

After several delays since the start of fall quarter 2007, the PUB is now set to open to students on the first day of spring quarter, Monday March 31.

According to Stuart Trippel, Acting Vice President for Administrative Services, Chartwells food services will move into the PUB, as will the Women’s Center, Multicultural Center, and Student Government, in the week of March 17, which is spring break.

Furniture has already arrived and is being assembled for the PUB’s conference rooms, as well as for the formerly mentioned groups.

The fences surrounding the PUB are to be taken down by Friday Feb. 29, as soon as all of the outdoor handrails are completed to eliminate danger.

Currently, SCC doesn’t have the deed to the PUB, but the transition is fast approaching. “We will have substantial completion and a turnover of ownership most likely on March 4,” said Trippel. “That’s the day we get the keys. That’s the day the ownership goes from them(the company building the PUB) to us.”

Trippel previously stated that complete occupancy of the PUB was to be achieved on Feb 18. However, unpredicted inspection complications led to the latest delay.

The PUB passed its electrical, plumbing, and mechanical inspections with flying colors, but fell short on its elevator inspections. One elevator was too close to a cooling unit, and the second elevator needed to be closer to a heater in order to comply with regulations.

In the coming week the PUB will undergo a second elevator inspection, a fire inspection, a boiler room inspection, and a final building inspection.

As the PUB appears to be in the final stages of its building process, some students seem to have forgotten their complaints as they eagerly await the day they can actually enter the PUB. SCC student Kar Yan is looking forward to “a new place to socialize... and eat.”

Although SCC student Carolyn Lacy has spent the past two quarters walking in an inconvenient circle to attend classes in the music building, she shares Yan’s positive mood. “I think it’s a nice way to bring in the new quarter and I think its great that they’ve finally completed it,” said Lacy. “It’ll be nice to have the PUB’s services available.”
