A hedgehog for all consoles

Many of us grew up on 8 bit and 16 bit systems, with the battle between Nintendo and Sega raging on. At the heads of their armies, respectively, were Mario (though truly, it should have been Donkey Kong) and Sonic the Hedgehog. After their many incarnations, each accrued a host of side characters, many of which getting their own games. After Sega's last attempt to stay in the hardware industry with the Dreamcast, they defaulted into the software side exclusively. The most recent incarnation of their popular Sonic franchise was “Shadow the Hedgehog.”

In the computing industry, the big name is Microsoft. That's not likely to change any time soon. But in a field very closely related, the video game industry, that's not entirely the case. It's one of the big three: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. It's been a few years since the major consoles have put forth a new toy for the masses to fight over, and this last fall the first of the systems was put forth for our gaming pleasure.
