10/29: PUB, toy drive, used book sale discussed
The Student Senate met in the Central Conference Room in the Administration (1000) building on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The meeting began at 2:04 p.m. Present were Sens. Nick Aldrich, Terrina Carver, Eric Goheen, Sandie Hazzard, Elliot Newlin, Alex Oh (also interim Secretary), Jillian Saban, and Bev Watkins. Also present were Executive Board members Erica Wilkes (president), Sean Keller (vice president), Carla Magee (treasurer), Sara Lundahl (legislative director), Chance Kennedy (student advocate) and Advisors Michelle Cruver and Scott Saunders.
John Rudolph, an employee of the SCC’s Technical Support Services (TSS) presented first at the meeting. He asked the Senate to assist in raising toys and money for kids in Iraq. He specified small toys and coloring books as special needs, along with money to assist in the cost of shipping the toys overseas. Student Advocate Kennedy and Sen. Aldrich provided suggestions on how to organize the drive. Sen. Goheen moved to carry over the request to next week’s meeting in order for Rudolph to put together more ideas and a more cohesive plan. The motion carried.
Legislative Director Lundahl requested funds from the Senate to acquire more student planners/guides. Most of the College’s supply has been taken for use by students, leaving about 200 for Winter and Spring quarter students. Lundahl requested $2,276 from the contingency fund to print 1,000 additional guides. The motion to approve the request carried with no objections and two abstentions.
Aldrich proposed that a used textbook sale be held during the first week of every quarter, with the Publicity Committee handling advertising for the event. The book sale would be a chance for students to sell their used textbooks from prior quarters to students in search of the books, presumably at a lower cost than could be found elsewhere. Various concerns were raised regarding the proposal; the main concern was that the organization of the event was unclear. The motion to approve the proposal did not pass due to those concerns. Advisor Saunders suggested more in-depth planning in organization and advertisement of the event.
The next items on the agenda were reports from Executive Board members and advisors. President Wilkes reported on the Under One Room Committee. The committee was designed to field ideas and guidelines for usage of the PUB. The committee will hold an open forum to discuss the concerns and ideas of the campus community surrounding the PUB.
Treasurer Magee reported that the supplemental budget due date has been postponed until 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3. Magee also reported that in future meetings, people attempting to engage in side meetings or conversations will be told to take them outside the meeting.
Lundahl reported Hiring Committee updates.
Advisor Cruver and Campus Ambassador Priscilla Thomas presented on the Subs and Clubs event that will take place Monday, Nov. 3. The event will be a brainstorming session for members of campus clubs to discuss various ideas.
Saunders reported that SCC’s Board of Publications needed a Senate-appointed representative to attend meetings held approximately twice a year. Lundahl volunteered for the board, and the appointment motion carried.
Saunders then reported on the PUB renovation meeting held Monday. The meeting, held with the architecture company, allowed planners to design a timeline for the PUB’s completion. More funding was secured for the remodeling project, as the Bookstore pledged $1 million and food services will contribute for kitchen updates. Future planning meetings will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 and 24, and Dec. 15. Saunders also made announcements regarding the Dave Alvin performance and a fund-raising event for the nursing program.
Goheen and Lundahl presented for the Publicity Committee. The committee sought slogans and poster ideas for the proposed holiday food drive. They also sought advertising ideas for the Under One Roof project.
Magee then cleared the room of anyone who was not a member of the Senate or Executive Board, or an advisor, in order to discuss hiring plans for the open secretary and Senate positions.
10/22: Hip-Hop Club, food drive, Subs and Clubs
Wellness Committee events, the re-recognition of the Hip-Hop Club and plans for a holiday food drive were discussed at last week’s Student Senate meeting, held Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Fishbowl of the PUB (900 Building).
The meeting began at 2:06 p.m. Present were Sens. Nick Aldrich, Terrina Carver, Eric Goheen, Sandie Hazzard, Alex Oh (also interim secretary), Elliot Newlin, Jillian Saban, and Bev Watkins. Also present were Executive Board members Erica Wilkes (president), Carla Magee (treasurer), Sara Lundahl (legislative director), Chance Kennedy (student advocate) and Advisor Michelle Cruver.
Following the call to order, Sen. Saban presented for the Wellness Committee. Saban discussed plans to offer depression screening on campus Nov. 4, which would include referrals to the campus Advising/Counseling Center for needs assessment. Also discussed were plans to put up nonsmoking signs in areas of campus where smoking is not permitted, along with signs directing students to nearby smoking areas.
A representative from the Hip-Hop Club asked the Senate to re-recognize the group as a funded SCC club. The club had lost recognition after losing their advisor. As they have a new advisor, 10 or more members and a club constitution on file, the club met the requirements of a campus club. Discussion amongst senators centered on whether or not 10 member signatures should be required at the meeting for the club to be recognized. The motion to re-recognize the club carried, with two objections and one abstention.
President Wilkes then gave her report. Wilkes brought up ideas for a campus food drive around the Thanksgiving season, and requested volunteers to help plan and advertise the event. Various ideas were put forth by government members, including advertising the event at Subs and Clubs, working with campus ambassadors and the Multicultural/Diversity Center, and teaming up with Phi Theta Kappa in the endeavor. It was also suggested that clubs work together to reach a campuswide goal, in competition with each other for prizes. Wilkes also presented at the Board of Trustees meeting that followed.
Legislative Director Lundahl presented on the status of applications for the vacant Senate position. Four applications had been received that met qualifications for the position. She requested that current senators volunteer for a hiring committee to interview the applicants; Sens. Carver, Newlin and Oh volunteered.
Lastly, Advisor Cruver presented on the campus Subs and Clubs event, which takes place at 3 p.m. Nov. 3. She also suggested that planning for the aforementioned food drive begin the next week, and that the focus of the food drive be hunger in the Shoreline community.
