Campus Security Log

Yeah, we know... they kicked you and your butt back into the designated smoking area, and gave you a ticket for parking in the bushes. But that’s not all the campus cops do.

Indecent exposure

Witnesses called Campus Security Sept. 30 with reports of a man exposing himself on North 160th Street and Greenwood Avenue North. The man was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and stood on the corner exposing himself to students on their way to school. When Security arrived the man had already fled the scene.

Irate students

  • On July 24, Security was called to the Registration Office when a student became irate over the results of a class appeal.
  • On Aug. 8, Security was called to the Financial Aid Office (FAO) when a man became verbally abusive to the staff. The man was not happy with his status at financial aid; Sgt. Gibler noted that this was his third or fourth visit to the office.
  • On Aug. 22, Security was brought into the FAO when a woman became irate. The woman was displeased with the information the office had relayed to her.
  • Security was called to the FAO Aug. 26 when a student who had been upset earlier in the day returned. Security stood by as the woman calmly addressed her financial aid needs.
  • Campus Security was called to the FAO Oct. 15 when a man, unhappy with the financial aid process, became verbally abusive to the staff.

Aid calls

Sgt. Gibler Says:

  • “It’s free to call the medics and have them come look over and assess the state of your health. Never refuse this free help, it may save your life.”
  • “If the medics do decide you need to go to the hospital, you can refuse their help.”
  • A student received medical attention on July 18 after being stung three times by bees on the lower lip and behind the ear in the parking lot by the 2100 Building.
  • During a routine visit to the campus salon on July 18 a customer was burned on the legs after tripping over the cord of a hot curling iron. Campus Security was called to help the customer ice the burns.
  • A Shoreline employee refused aid after being stung by a bee in the campus parking lot on Sept. 4. The victim had no bee allergies.
  • On Sept. 23, a student went to the Security Office to receive medical attention after experiencing severe abdominal cramps. An ambulance was called, and the student was taken to the hospital.
  • A student was accidentally kicked in the gym on Sept. 1. After being treated for a swollen eye, the student declined to press charges, as it was an accident.
  • A student was treated for a sprained ankle by Campus Security on Sept. 13 after running to make a bus on time. Medics were called, and the student was taken to the hospital.
  • On Oct. 15, a student fainted in the Dental Hygiene Clinic. The patient was examined by medics and discharged that day.
  • Campus Security responded to a student in the gym with a badly sprained, possibly broken ankle on Oct. 18. Medics came and transported the patient to the hospital.
  • Campus Security was called to the 800 Building Oct. 20 to respond to a student having a seizure. The student was examined by medics before being taken to the hospital by a family member.

Vehicle accidents

  • Campus Security was called when three unoccupied vehicles were involved in a crash July 15 in the visitors’ parking lot. A Mazda’s parking brake failed, causing it to roll into a parked Dodge Durango and a Honda Civic.
  • Security was called to a one-car accident on Aug. 4 on the east side of campus. A red Mustang parked in a clearly marked no-parking area was sent into a gully after the ground gave way underneath the its weight. The victim paid the towing fees and drove the car home.
  • A call was made to the Security Office on September 16 when a small Subaru was stranded, stuck on rocks that the victim had tried to cross. Security helped as the victim’s brother towed the car to level ground.
  • Shoreline Security was called after one of its trucks was involved in an accident Sept. 17. The minor fender-bender occurred when the truck backed into a Toyota. Neither party was injured.
  • On Sept. 24, a three-car accident on Greenwood Avenue North was called in. Security came to assist the students, who drove away with no injuries after exchanging pertinent information.
  • A Shoreline shuttle bus was involved in a three-car accident Sept. 24 at Greenwood Avenue North and North 160th Street. Security responded to the scene to assist with traffic and whiplash injuries.
  • On Oct. 16, a Shoreline employee made a call to campus security to report vehicle damage. The caller’s Chrysler was hit in the staff parking lot by what witnesses described as an Isuzu Trooper. The suspect fled the scene.
  • On Oct. 20, a Nissan hit a Chevy Blazer in the Greenwood parking lot. Security was called to take a report of the incident.

Vehicle theft and vandalism

  • On Sept. 22 a Fall Quarter parking sticker was stolen from the back window of a Subaru in the parking lot. With no sign of forced entry, the victim reported that their back window might have been open enough for this to happen without forced entry.
  • On Oct. 11, the left rear passenger window of a green Honda Odyssey was found shattered. Nothing had been stolen.
  • Campus Security was called Oct. 14 when the right front window of a Plymouth was shattered, and the CD player, CD changer and car stereo were stolen.
  • On Oct. 21, a bowling ball, bag and shoes were reported stolen from a student’s vehicle. There was no sign of forced entry.

Theft

  • On July 22, Campus Security arrested a nonstudent for stealing a book from the Shoreline Bookstore. He had stolen from other campus stores but was never caught. When the suspect tried to walk out the door, an employee noticed the book in his pants, and the bookstore manager stopped him. He came in cooperatively with the book on Managerial Accounting.
  • On July 28, a purse was stolen form the computer lab in the library.
  • On Oct. 2, a computer was stolen from Room 1105.
  • On Oct. 22, a purse was stolen from the gymnasium.

Vandalism

  • At 3:55 p.m. Sept. 17 a nonstudent was caught writing graffiti on the campus’s Metro bus shelter. Security confiscated his marking pen, and sent the minor home.
  • On Sept. 26, Security found Shoreline’s front entrance sign covered in graffiti. Pictures were taken and sent to the Seattle Police Department Gang Unit.

The homeless

  • On July 11 a homeless man came to Campus Security looking for clothes. The medics were called to treat his bare feet, which were covered in sores. He was taken to the hospital to be treated.
  • On Oct. 8, an elderly, homeless man wandered around campus in search of Jackson Street. Campus Security escorted him to the bus stop, but he refused to get on the bus and came back on campus. The Shoreline Police Department was called, and the man was banned from the campus for one year.
