Bringing the PUB up to code
Tired of running into construction? Students won’t be seeing the last of it yet. In July of 2005, the reconstruction of the PUB is planned to get underway.
Scott Saunders, Interim Director of Student Programs, said the main concern about the reconstruction of the PUB is to bring it up to code. The PUB was built in 1964 and hasn’t been updated since.
“There are not enough steel reinforcements,” said Saunders. “The Pub would not hold up in an earthquake.”
SCC has been saving money toward this project since 1987. The student body voted three times on ways to accumulate money for the reconstruction. A wide majority in Dec. of 1999, agreed to withdraw three dollars for every one credit, up to ten credits, from each student’s tuition. An additional 6% is also being taken out of each student’s activities fee.
When considering what was going to be remodeled in the PUB, SCC had a 21 million dollar wish list. It will take 10 million dollars alone to remodel the stage. Saunders said the PUB will most likely be 33% - 50% larger.
The mastermind behind the PUB reconstruction is Opsis Architecture. They were established in 1999 and their firm works out of Portland, OR.
“We’re excited to be working with the Opsis group,” said Saunders. “They have a large background, one of their buildings being the Student Recreation Center at Western Washington University.”
Although it is too early to say exactly what the layout of the PUB will look like, Saunders said they plan on having more rooms available for club meetings. He also said students suggested having a lounge area to hang out or sleep between classes, and instead of having games and ping-pong tables sporadically placed in the PUB, they might create a game room. With these ideas, the PUB will become more “student friendly” and a better environment to meet new people.
Members of the Student Body Association (SBA) at SCC are getting involved with the reconstruction of the PUB. Saunders invites anyone who is interested in lending ideas or a helping hand to please contact him. You may do so through e-mail at ssaunder@ctc.edu or by phone at (206) 546-5821.
