Interview with Karen Mallette
Four days a week SCC student Karen Mallette, 45, wakes up at 4:30 a.m. to ride her bike from the Kingston ferry terminal in Edmonds to school and work. She rides on average 75 miles a week, and has been doing this for two and a half years now. Mallette starts her daily journey from the Kitsap Peninsula where she embarks on the ferry to Edmonds. She spends about two hours a day riding in traffic, and is exposed to wet weather and careless drivers. For many car-addicted people, this must seem crazy. In an interview, I asked her why the heck anyone would do this. Here are some revelations about it:
Why do you choose to ride in traffic every day?
It all started out because I couldn’t afford the ferry anymore. They raised the fare to $10 one-way. I started biking to save money. I also needed to increase my activity.
What are the benefits for you?
Watching my body lose weight and my cholesterol level plummet. Also watching the image of myself change. I lost 75 pounds. I have more energy and sleep better at night.
What are some scary experiences you had while riding?
Safety is always the thing that scares me. Imagine 18 wheelers with less than 12 inches of clearance passing. I have to be extremely conscious of sounds around me, drivers making right hand-turns and crossing intersections. It’s very much a defensive thing. If you’re a defensive car driver then you’ll be a defensive biker.
Do you ever get tired of it?
Yes! (She gives herself a break by driving her car to school one day a week.)
What sort of gear is essential for commuting?
A bike that fits you, a helmet and clothing that lights you up. After that it’s personal preference. Concerning clothing, think of staying dry from the inside (instead of from the outside). Get clothing that wicks perspiration away from the body. Bright colors are also important. Also, get your bike lit for day and night with reflectors and lights.
If you had to choose between a car or a bike, which would you choose?
I’m actually considering that question right now. I think my answer would be my bicycle!
