Dave Alvin & Chris Gaffney with Christy McWilson
Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003
7:30 p.m., Campus Theater

2000 Grammy winner for “Best Traditional Folk Album,” Dave Alvin hit the L.A. scene in the late ‘70s with his band, the Blasters. As a songwriter and guitarist, Alvin helped establish the Blasters as one of the most significant roots-rock bands of all time. Since leaving The Blasters in 1985, Alvin has worked with X and The Knitters before embarking on an esteemed solo career that has highlighted his abilities to both write and interpret great songs. (He talks about his life as a professional musician on page 9). Alvin’s collection of interpretations of American folk songs, “Public Domain” (Hightone, 2000), won the Grammy for that year. “Occasionally I make records,” said Alvin, “but what I do is play live.”

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)’
Written by Ann-Marie MacDonald
Directed by Shelley Douma
Nov. 13-15 & Nov. 20-22, 2003
7:30 p.m., Lobby Theater

“Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet” is a fresh, vibrant and comedic story of a college professor, Constance Ledbelly, who has developed certain “theories” about the origins of some of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies — in particular, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Othello.” Through the magic of theater and Constance’s imagination, she is transported to Othello’s citadel in Cypress and ancient Verona where she meets face to face with the heroes, villains and other characters of these famous plays. Most importantly, she meets her heroines — Juliet and Desdemona — who open her eyes to herself. All the while, Constance encounters ghosts and sword fights, and she and the audience have a fast-paced, funny, good time.
