Shoreline Sports Update
Women’s Soccer
The women are working hard, especially with only 14 players on the roster.
The season began with a shutout against Tacoma and followed in a 0-0 tie with Southwest Oregon. In their game against Highline, the Lady Dolphins were defeated 5-1, with Michelle Tiedeman scoring the team’s only goal. Surprisingly in their game against Tacoma in the second week of October, they won by forfeiture.
The women’s soccer team currently holds a 3-5-4 record.
Men’s Soccer
This year’s roster holds a commanding 23 players, with only a handful of sophomores.
The first win of their season came against Peninsula that ended 4-1. In the opening week of October, the men’s soccer team was scheduled to play on the road, with three away games. They triumphantly returned with two wins against Southwest Oregon and Pierce and a tie against Tacoma. Their best game came against Pierce, where they dominated the game ending it at 9-1.
The men’s soccer team is currently ranked eighth in the Southwest Division.
Volleyball
It may not have been a victorious first half for the season, but the Lady Dolphins are still enjoying the game and learning to work together.
After coming out of the Crossover Tournament with only a single win against Grays Harbor, Shoreline was defeated by their rivals Bellevue and Everett the same week. They are currently tied with Skagit County, whom the Dolphins attribute their first win, and are 1-4 in the North League standings.
Despite the recent losses, the Lady Dolphins still remain strong in spirit that their game will improve.
Softball
The Athletic Department recently announced that Paul Smiley has accepted the position of co-head coach for women’s softball. Smiley will be working alongside fellow Head Coach Chip Romain, who has been with the team for the past six years. Smiley came to the college two years ago as an assistant coach.
SCC recently completed a season where the women went 28-12 (24-8 in league play), which set a school record for wins in a season. They finished third in the Northern Region and competed in the NWAACC championship tournament.
Smiley coached competitive ASA and high school fast-pitch softball for many years. He has taken four ASA teams to nationals and two high school teams to the state tournament. He also coached the only team from Washington to ever win the prestigious Colorado Classic Tournament.
Since he started coaching in 1985, Smiley has helped more than 150 young, student athletes achieve their dreams of playing softball at the collegiate level. He is working on continuing his education so that he may eventually have the opportunity to coach at the Division I level.
