Video survey participants needed!
According to the Student Body Association constitution, every year the Student Body Advocate must perform a survey of the student population. This survey is meant to gauge student life on campus, and bring to light any issues that students may have.
In the past the survey has been in written form, and has also been plagued with issues. Let’s honestly think about this. Someone who potentially has no experience in devising a scientific survey is supposed come up with one for the entire school, administer it and then evaluate it. But how many of you really want to take a survey -- something like what is given out in a mall or something? How many of you would actually seek out this survey to participate?
Well this year I would like to do things a little differently. With the help of Judy Yu (our public information officer) there will be an online survey within the Shoreline Web site. I am also to be conducting a video survey during the school year. In this survey there will be some standard questions, but there will also be time allotted for the participants to express their concerns openly. Throughout the year I will be walking around campus talking with random people. So, if you see me running around campus with a video camera and you want to be a part of it, just stop me and let me know. I will most likely be wearing my blue Student Government vest while I’m interviewing.
I would also like to follow at least four students through their year here at Shoreline. I would prefer to have two new students, and two returning students. Somewhere in that group, it would be great to have at least one international and one immigrant student. If all goes as planned, I will also be holding focus groups related to each division.
I feel that by doing the survey in this manner, students’ voices will truly be heard. All the interviews will be compiled into a video at the end of the year, to be presented to a joint session of the Student Government. I will also approach Shoreline’s new College Council (comprised of students, administrators and other faculty) with the completed survey.
If you have something you want to change about the school, this will be a great way to do it. The more people I have, the stronger the voice. Help Student Government make the changes you want.
You can reach me in the Student Government office, located in the PUB (Room 950), or call (206) 546-6996.
