International Week entertainment funding, fund-raiser volunteers top agenda at Senate meeting

Editor-in-Chief

Plans for International Week and the annual SCC Foundation fund-raiser topped the agenda on last week’s Student Senate meeting, held Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Executive Boardroom in the Administration (1000) Building.

The meeting began at 2:07 p.m., with Sens. Nick Aldrich, Terrina Carver, Eric Goheen, Sandie Hazzard, Alex Oh (also interim secretary), Elliot Newlin, Jillian Saban, and Bev Watkins in attendance. Also present were Executive Board members Erica Wilkes (president), Sean Keller (vice president), Carla Magee (treasurer), Sara Lundahl (legislative director) and Advisor Michelle Cruver.

After the call to order, Colleen Cooper of SCC’s International Programs Department gave a presentation on the upcoming International Week (Nov. 17 to 21). To kick off the week, planners hope to bring in an international artist to perform for the campus community. They selected Obo Addy, a drummer from Ghana, to give a one-hour performance and teach a one-hour open drumming class. To help cover Addy’s $1,500 fee, Cooper requested $800 from the Senate. The motion carried, with objection.

A representative from SCC’s Foundation (which awards grants and scholarships for students) presented information about the group’s primary annual fund-raiser, a breakfast held for donors. The Foundation sought Senate support in volunteering for the event, as well as assistance in finding other student volunteers to serve at the breakfast. The event will be held from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Nov. 13. The signup sheet for students who wish to serve as volunteer servers for the fund-raiser will be kept in the Student Government Office; anyone who wants to sign up is welcome to do so.

A request was presented for two Senators to join the existing Technology Review Committee (TRC). The TRC handles the campus technology budget and is responsible for approving such things as additional computers for use on campus. Sens. Elliot Newlin and Bev Watkins were added to the committee.

Sen. Terrina Carver requested that a computer for use by the senators be added to the Student Government Office. The discussion that followed included concern that the computer was not necessary to the functions of the Senate. The motion was dropped.

The meeting concluded at about 3 p.m.

Those who wish to attend Student Senate meetings as observers are welcome to do so. Meetings take place at 2 p.m. every Wednesday and are usually held in the Administration Building; check for exact location of each week’s meeting with Student Government or with the main desk in the 1000 Building. Student Government Executive meetings are held at 2 p.m. each Friday. Meeting locations also vary.
