Lady Dolphins set up for strong season

Shoreline opened its home volleyball season Wednesday, Sept. 24, by defeating Skagit Valley College 30-23, 30-16, 30-23.

Leading the Lady Dolphin’s was defensive specialist Libby Hubbard with 11 kills and 15 digs. Setter Vickie Hinkle added 27 assists along with four aces. Skagit Valley College did put up a good fight in the first and third sets but appeared no match for SCC overall.

The following Friday, the Dolphins competed against Whatcom Community College. Megan Manolopoulos and Luanne Anderson, both offside hitters, came out of the game with eight kills each while Hinkle helped with 28 assists. The team played fiercely in each set but lost 30-28, 30-21, 30-20. With the way these women are performing, however, things are still looking well for the season.

This year the team is comprised of mostly freshmen. The team’s only sophomore is Anderson who transfered to Shoreline after an excellent season at Edmonds Community College. Ayano Hashimo and Libby Hubbard are the team’s defensive specialists and Candra McCartney plays setter. Among the remaining hitters are Lauren Allen, Erika Wilkes, Karen McGinnis, and Alicia Makanani.

“The girls are just out to have fun, you know, enjoy the game and they seem to play better that way,” said SCC Coach Raquel West. “If we can defeat Olympic and Everett also, we’ll [definitely] make it to the playoffs this year.”

Last year, the SCC volleyball team became the first athletic team in SCC history to make it to an NWAACC-sponsored championship game. They showed tremendous force and ended up playing the final game of the conference against Mount Hood for the championship.

The Lady Dolphins took home second place in the 2002 Washington/Oregon Conference.
