5'10" Quincey Belle relies on his shooting and defense in games.

I recently sat down to talk with Dolphin guard, Quincy Belle, after the men's b-ball team's practice prior to their big game against Olympic CC.

After talking with the California native for 15 minutes, Belle was good enough to accept my challenge to a game of one-on-one, and we proceeded to mid-court.

Although Belle was eager to test his skills against my rusty basketball expertise, I remained confident that despite my lack of shooting accuracy, my quick hand speed and strong defense might give him some problems. Soon, I would find out how wrong I was.

When I tried to swipe the ball away from Belle, it was like trying to find an invisible object.

It bounced with incredible speed between his legs, behind his back, and finally around me as he shattered my flimsy defense, driving to the lane for a beautiful finger-roll.

I took numerous spills to the floor trying to chase the elusive ball behind his back. I managed to score a couple of baskets when he lost control while dribbling a bit too fancy, but somehow I got the impression he was going easy on me.

Simply put, Belle had moves I never imagined were possible as he feinted and juked, seemingly defying physics.

While reflecting on my punishment on the hardwood, I gained a new respect for the team's athleticism and skill.

Here are some of the thoughts Quincy Belle shared with The Ebbtide.

Ebbtide: How did you get into basketball?

Belle: I started playing when I was in ninth grade. My strength in basketball is shooting the ball.

I also play pretty good defense. My only weakness is that I'm 5-10, and everybody else is 6-3 or 6-2, and that gets hard.

Ebbtide: Did you ever imagine yourself playing college basketball?

Belle: Well, that's what I always wanted to do.

Mike thought that his skills on defense would stand up against SCC Guard, Quincy Belle. This only meade it harder for Mike to accept his doom.

Ebbtide: What is a typical week like for an SCC basketball player?

Belle: We practice at 2 p.m., and my last class gets out at 1:30 p.m. After class I go to the gym, change and shoot around before practice. We play every Wednesday and Saturday, so we practice during the other weekdays.

Ebbtide: Is it a hard grind to balance your classes with basketball?

Belle: It is sometimes, especially on game day. If we play on the road we get back around 11 or 11:30 pm. Then if you have homework, or something, you're up until 2 am.

Then you have to get up to go to classes at 9:30 and you don't get that much sleep.

Ebbtide: How far do you hope to go in basketball?

Belle: Hopefully I can make it into a league or play overseas.

Ebbtide: Okay, let's switch gears for a minute. Who's your favorite pro player?

Belle: Vince Carter (a guard with the Toronto Raptors); he's the man! He can shoot, he can jump and defend.

Ebbtide: How about your favorite team?

Belle: My favorite team is the Kings. They'll definitely go to the finals this year. They're going to crush Dallas.

Ebbtide: Do you have anything else you would like to add?

Belle: Now, everyone listen. When you all come to the home games, watch out for the Q-shuffle!
