OTHER SPORT STORIES - Evolution of a mascot - Rowing - Regatta? Ya betcha! Mascot Smackdown Kirsten Clark Sports Editor For my last article as the Ebbtide sports editor, I just have one final thing to say, "You've got to be kidding me!" As many of you know, or may not know for that matter, early in this quarter I wrote an article addressing the issue of our mascot. As great as I think dolphins are, I do not think that they make good mascots. If you would like to see my reasons please refer to Ebbtide edition from Oct. 18th. But all of us on staff became rather excited when we heard of the contest to draw a new mascot. As far as we understood, it meant that the dolphin was no more. Illustration by Ebbtide Staff The excitement was building for what the new mascot could be: something ferocious, something mean, maybe even something to strike fear into our opponents? NO! What has arisen from our distinguished sports department is the unbearably frightening "Dolphie the dancing dolphin." See what I mean? You've got to be kidding me! As nice as I think the drawing was that was turned in, this again is not what I would call a mascot. Although I did not have the pleasure of sitting on the committee who had chosen the new mascot, I am hoping that they did not have many entries to choose from. Ok so this is really serious right? We are now not only going to be known as the Shoreline Dolphins, but will now be represented by "Dolphie," who of course dances on his or her two legs (that's right I said two legs) wagging it's little dolphin tail around. In every drawing that I have seen, the tail has ripped through the rear of "Dolphie's" uniform. This is so embarrassing. Really at this point I donÕt know what to say, other than the fact that I am incredibly shocked that our school voted to be represented by a dancing dolphin. By the way did any of you get to put your word in on this? Did any of you submit something to be judged? Do any of you care what symbol represents our school? Well if so do me one last favor, send something in. Show us your opinion and give the next sports editor something to write about! In closing, all I would like to see is the former Shoreline Samurai pitted against "Dolphie the Dancing Dolphin" in the final SCC mascot grudge match. GO SAMURAI! © 2003 Shoreline Community College™
