Out and Proud crowd indulges the campus

Rainbow Club drags them out, dusts them off, and
shows everyone unrestrained pleasure

The Out and Proud event, organized by members of the Rainbow Club, featured a variety of activities which included poetry readings, testimonials, singing, monologues, drag queens and more. Deemed “a celebration of identity,” the Rainbow club hopes to make the occasion an annual spring quarter event.

Top 10 Ebbtide stories of the year

1. War & Protest Coverage
Simply too broad of a topic to list a single news or feature story that stood out; over 20 relevant articles appeared in the Ebbtide through the course of the year. Probably the climax of our coverage came in our April 11 edition which contained a wonderful photo spread that accompanied a feature on a protest that occurred days after the fighting in Iraq began.
2. Michael Moore
Without a doubt the largest on campus event of the year, Michael Moore’s appearance brought not only the attention of the campus media, but also major media from Western Washington. Moore’s presence also provoked a group of protesters on campus the night of his lecture. Our feature story of the event, written by Chris Jones, also appeared in the Washington State Free Press.
3. Cabaret
What started out as a simple promotional poster for SCC’s annual spring musical, turned out to be the center of a major controversy when President Moore disallowed the distribution of the poster before changes were made to the design. Namely, a swastika which dominated the poster had to be removed. This caused an uproar from the crew of the musical, who saw the delay as cutting into their valuable, limited promotional time. Questions were also raised about whether it was appropriate for the Dean of Humanities, who brought the poster to the President’s attention, to speak out on a matter such as this. The musical came off splendidly, controversy or no.
4. Feminist opinion spread
What originally began as a simply two piece opinion column burst into a 3 page spread after sociologist and author Allen Johnson gave a lecture on campus sparking a heated reaction from members of the Ebbtide staff. It definitely became the most compelling opinion spread during our year of publication.
5. Jim McDermott speaks on campus
Another notable speaker, Jim McDermott, invited by the Philosophers and Dismal Scientists Society, addressed a packed SCC theater on Nov. 4, 2002. Returning from a recent trip to Iraq, McDermott, who was strongly opposed to the war, shared his impressions on what was then an impending conflict.
6. SCC campus brawl
A braw erupted in the SCC gym during an open basketball session on Oct. 22 between a member of the Muslim Student Association and a basketball player. The story written by Daytona Danielsen and Kirsten Clark fed a buzz of curiosity flowing around campus regarding the event. What made this story such a hot-wire issue were the allegations that racial slurs were exchanged. It was one of the larger on campus stories of the year.
7. The Current State of Pop Culture
Written by former A&E madman Brain Kerin, his final piece as the section editor featured an awesome spread, breaking down numerous elements of pop culture including music, movies, and television. The piece was a compliment to his unique character as his writing romped through contemporary pop.
8. Tuition increases
This piece currently serves as an “I told you so.” An overlooked article that appeared several months after it was initially written featured an SCC student’s fight to create awareness on tuition increases which are quite startling compared to other states (check out California’s current community college rates). Receiving a lack of participation from the student body, the student’s calls went unheeded. Not surprisingly tuition has once again increased.
9. Dolphie’s Creation
Dolphie the Dolphin, the mascot of the college was finally fleshed out by way of artistic sketches, and more visibly a mascot suit. A wacky component of SCC basketball events, an article appeared in the Feb. 14 edition of the Ebbtide featuring then sports editor, Michael Carter, who wore the suit for a basketball doubleheader. The story chronicled the events he experienced through evening which included being smacked in the head by the athletic director and a vicious tackle the hardwood by a crazed fan.
10. Jay Inslee
The appearance of Congressman Jay Inslee on campus was yet another one of SCC standout speakers. Grace Macmillan’s article, appearing in the March 31 edition of the Ebbtide featured an impressive breakdown of Inslee’s lecture.
