Former student questions administrative decisions

Editor:

How long will students and faculty at SCC yawn at the disaster this institution has become?

Please, look at what is happening:

We recruited Michael Moore and Howard Zinn (both espousing leftist politics) for thousands of dollars. Is there any attempt at bringing in a balance of opinion? Any attempt at all? I think not. Not even a hint. It only takes so much effort to recognize that the student and faculty political leanings at this institution are dominantly liberal, so why not bring in alternative opinions for the sake of expanding your horizons?

Our student government (or half of a student government, at least) has considered giving itself a $300 bonus. Wait, I thought only crooked politicians did stuff like that? And another thing: SCC's Student Government budget is way too bloated (try hundreds of thousands of dollars). There's absolutely no reason they should be the ones deciding if the college should buy new chairs in the cafeteria.

We started a new club called Puget Sound Students Against the War that decided to affiliate itself with Not in Our Name, an organization that has been partly organized by Clark Kissinger, a member of the Maoist Revolutionary Communist Party. Quite an affiliation you've got there.

We hosted a one-day retreat to discuss what to do about perceived discrimination toward minority students on campus. (I went on an SCC retreat for student leaders last year - they waste time and money. But mostly, they just insult your intelligence.) This retreat resulted in a "Banners and Barriers" display that got little to no reaction.

Last fall, Associate Dean of Business Administration James Jory, who had helped draft a school policy against personal use of work computers, was discovered to have 13 e-mails related to his outside work as an attorney and 71,715 graphic images and movies containing pornographic material stored on his computer. Also, SCC has been cited for sidestepping competitive bids on machining equipment, awarding financial aid to ineligible recipients, online stock trading by an employee on a work computer, and operation of a private sports camp by an employee using school facilities, according to Seattle Times editorial columnist Matt Rosenberg.

So where does this leave us? In a grimy, slummy dump. I mean, let's not forget about the baseball coach who brought team members to strip clubs or the lab aides who suddenly lost their jobs or had their hours severely cut back because of a budget miscommunication. What I want to know is, what goes on behind the scenes that we don't know about?

I graduated from SCC last spring. There are some great people and some awesome professors who work here. But for the most part, the institution is basically a joke.
