Student Senate report
Shane Suzuki
Ebbtide Reporter
The Ebbtide feels it is important to inform the student body of the decisions made by the Student Senate. The decisions the Student Senate makes affect the campus community as a whole regarding a myriad of important issues, namely budget allocation, approval of clubs, policies and other issues.
The following information is a compilation of the information from the Student Senate meeting of Wednesday, April 30, 2003.
Student Senate refers parking garage funding request to the Budget Committee.
In a unanimous vote of the Student Senate, a $57,000 request presented by Beverly Brandt for the pre-design of a parking garage was approved to be heard by the Budget Committee.
The parking garage will be a 1650 stall building located near the proposed Allied Health building location, where the current soccer fields are. The garage will be paid for with student parking fees and will be eligible for state matching funds from the state government.
The current proposal will add the pre-design of the parking garage to the already begun pre-design on the Allied Health building. By combing these projects, the school will save nearly $100,000.
Shoreline's parking garage will be similar to the garage being built by Bellevue Community College. BCC's cost nearly 7.9 million dollars and is almost entirely paid for by Student fees. The 625-stall garage will be paid off within the next three years.
If approved by the budget committee and the state government, work on the garage will commence July 2005 with a finish date of July 2006.
Softball tournament funding approved.
Shoreline's Girls Softball Team received a funding request of $3014 to fund a trip to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament in Portland, May 15-18th.
The Softball team, which is 24-6 this year and second in the Northern Region, is enjoying a very successful season and ends their regular season against the first place Edmonds CC Friday, May 2nd.
The softball team already participated in a national tournament in Florida earlier in the year, which they financed completely on their own.
New polling areas commissioned.
In an effort to bolster voting numbers, the student senate approved two new polling stations, one in the lobby of the student PUB, and one in the library. Both of these stations will require poll workers, whose funding will be decided at the Budget Committee hearing Tuesday May 6th.
The two new polling areas will be hooked up to computers to allow students to easily access polling web sites and will have workers to help those who need voting assistance.
