Campus observes 9/11 anniversary
Ty Garfield
Editor-in-Chief

The College observed a moment of silence at the Flagpole between 11:30 and 11:45 a.m. Wednesday September 11, 2002. The event was in memory of those lives lost in the terrorist attacks upon the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington D.C.

College President, Holly Moore, led the moment to demonstrate the how the campus can participate with our surrounding community with outreach and philanthropy. The college participated in a collection drive for families lacking basic needs.

Items such as; canned foods, bottled beverages, infant care products, and hygiene products were placed in collection boxes at the Flagpole itself as well as in the foyer of the Administration Building (1000 Building.)

Donations delivered to the Shoreline Food Lifeline arrived via a City of Shoreline fire engine.

Food Lifeline is a not-for-profit distributor to neighborhood food banks and emergency meal programs in Washington. According to their web site, www.scn.org/ip/foodlifeline, Food Lifeline "distributes the equivalent of about 900,000 meals every month." For more information about Food Lifeline contact: Bob Cooper at (206) 545-FOOD.

Items of particular need include oral hygiene products, baby food and diapers. Funds collected at the FOSS Building supported of the 911 fund via the SCC Foundation. At this printing is undetermined the amount this effort raised.

In addition to the collection and fund raising efforts, Melanie Granfors, public information officer for the City of Shoreline Fire Department, made information regarding a bone marrow drive available.

According to a press release dated March 14, 2002: beginning on April 13, 2002 the Shoreline fire department initiated a bone marrow drive on behalf of four-year old Nicole Howard and 27-year old Lynda Lyons.

Suffering the loss of their brothers-in-arms in New York, the Shoreline fire department has reaffirmed a commitment to community outreach program.

The Fire Departments participation in the observance ceremony on the Shoreline campus is indicative of the unity within the community.
