Stiff competition only barrier remaining on the road to division title
.

The scramble for the North Division title has Bellevue and Edmonds all tied up with records of 7-3 while Olympic and Shoreline's 7-4 records threaten to push their way into first as well. With five games remaining in the Dolphins' season and a plague of injuries hampering their expected success, coach Steve Eskridge realizes that attaining the coveted division title won't be a cakewalk.

"It's anybody's division, it's really up in the air," Eskridge said.

The last four games have added two to both the win and the loss column for the Dolphins, Eskridge predicts that the even pattern will have to change if Shoreline expects to take first.

"Realistically, we have to win every game," Eskridge said.

Shoreline made its presence known Jan. 30 against Peninsula (2-9, 8-16) in a 98-54 blowout of the Pirates. The 44 point advantage was lead by first-year forward Bobby Johnson's 21 points and 7 rebounds. First-year guards Cody Huntingford and Julius McMillion followed with 20 points and 15 points, respectively.

Eskridge attributed the lopsided victory to a lack of Pirate starters and the simple fact that the Dolphins "played a good game and Peninsula didn't."

That Saturday, Shoreline took its second loss of the season in a defeat against the Olympic Rangers (7-4,13-10). The high-scoring 99-90 loss was partly a product of nagging injuries to the Dolphin lineup, according to Eskridge.

"Willis Woods has been in and out all year," Eskridge said, referring to last year's Dolphin leader now sidelined by an ankle injury. "We've decided to rest him a lot before playoffs."

Woods was able to accumulate 10 points in the Olympic match but will likely see little playing time until the championship tournament.

Leading the Dolphins against the Rangers was Johnson's 24 points, second-year guard Ricky Frazier's 23 points and Huntingford's 20 points. The three combined for over two-thirds of the Dolphins' total scoring but could not amass enough fire power for a victory over Olympic's 99 points, despite a leading by 12 early in the match.

"They outplayed us," Eskridge said. "We got complacent and allowed them to get into a flow."

Shoreline picked up their seventh win in a 82-72 victory over Bellevue on Feb. 6. The Helmsmen (7-3, 9-12) were unable to stop Eskridge's unconventional line up of quicker and smaller players.

Second-year forward Marcus Smith scored 12 points against Bellevue but hyper-extended his knee during the match, benching him for the rest of the game and the game following. Johnson lead his team for the third time in a row with 24 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Fraizer's 17 points and Huntingford's 16 points.

"We played without our core players, but we played hard," Eskridge said.

The Dolphins had a chance to pull ahead of the pack last Saturday, Feb. 9, against the Skagit Valley Cardinals (6-5, 10-11). Shoreline fell behind 46-37 in the first half, however, and could not recover before losing 90-77.

Second-year players Marcus Smith and Willis Woods were both out on injuries for the match, leaving only two veteran starters for Eskridge to work with.

"When you got young guys stepping up it can be tough," Eskridge said. "We came in intense and determined, but our guys just weren't in sync."

Frazier carried the team with 25 points, followed by Johnson's 20 points -- his seventh game in a row scoring 19 points or more.

With four teams clashing together for the division title during the remainder of the season, the Dolphins hope to put up a hard fight for the stiff competition they know is coming.

"Towards the end of the league season competition gets tougher," Eskridge said. "The season hasn't gone exactly like we wanted due to injuries, but if we do our thing, hopefully everything will work out."
