Book Review: War for the Oaks Emma Bull $13.95, from Tor Books
I have a long history with fantasy books, so I'm not too easily impressed. It's rare for me to come across a novel that I would recommend to almost anyone, but War for the Oaks is at the top of that short list.
The book features Eddi McCandry, rock 'n' roll chick and resident of Minneapolis. Her life isn't exactly at a high point; she's just broken it off with her boyfriend and their band. She isn't looking for anything but a new job. Instead, she is draw into a turf war between the local fey (most people would say fairies, but they really don't like that). Eddi doesn't know who she can trust, and sometimes she gets the feeling her "allies" dislike her as much as the enemy. She's caught in the middle of a fight between creatures she didn't believe in and powers she never thought existed. What's a girl to do?
If you're Eddi, you start a band.
I first encountered this book three years ago in a used bookstore. The battered, dog-eared paperback looked somewhat interesting and was discounted because it was in lousy shape. I started it that afternoon and wound up spending most of the night with it. When I woke the next morning, I was determined to get my hands on a better copy. You can imagine my frustration and astonishment when I learned it was out of print.
"If it's out of print," you may ask yourself, "why is she telling me about it? Is this some sadistic game?" Fear not! War for the Oaks was reissued this summer in trade paperback with a beautiful new cover.
Go get it! When you're finished, you may want to tell all your friends and neighbors, but don't loan anyone your copy. It will disappear like magic.
