What I thought: Where do I order the beer?
What it is: Pagoda Union Building (9000's)
This structure was built by student funds to house student functions and supports. Found in this building are the Ebbtide office, student store, game room, cafeteria, quiet study room, coffee shop 3rd floor: International advising office, student leadership center and the multicultural and women's center.
SS&A:
What I thought: What does my school have to do with Social Security?
What it is: Student Services & Activity fee
This fee creates the budget that pays for sports programs, student clubs and other student life related activities.
SCOF:
What I thought: I'm paying so much money for school I'm being laughed at.
What it is: Sustainable Commuter Option fee
The fee is not an option, but being able to buy a cheaper ORCA bus pass is. $34 per student goes to a fund that subsidizes bus passes. ORCA cards are so popular that they have sold out the first quarter of this year.
SBA:
What I thought: Who is this person?
What it is: Student Body
Association
This term represents all of the students at Shoreline, but is often used to refer to the elected student government.
SLC:
What I thought: Salt Lake City?
What it is: Student Learning Center
This room provides space for student government and the Art & Entertainment Board, as well as support for student clubs.
FOSS:
What I thought: Foundry of Student Services
What it is: (Faculty Office and Student Services)
The FOSS building is the 5000 building on campus where many professors' offices are located. This building also offers many student resources such as advising/counseling, campus security and the cashier's office in case you need to pay for a parking ticket.
THE EBBTIDE:
What I thought: Restaurant? Website, maybe?
What it is: This newspaper
Paradoxically, many of us on staff here at the Ebbtide had never heard of this fine paper before we began work here. If you're reading this article, you've more-than-likely figured it out, but if not, you're reading it.
VCT:
What I thought: Veranda for Creative Thinking?
What it is: Visual Communications/Technology
Think Art. The 2000 building houses state-of-the-art labs for classes ranging from Beginner's Photoshop to 3D Animation with Maya.
FAFSA:
What I thought: Soccer League?
What it is: Free Application for Federal Student Aid
I discovered the hard way, much to my horror, that no financial aid can be awarded to any person who doesn't fill out a FAFSA. Loans, grants, you name it. One of these forms must be completed every year you plan on obtaining financial aid at
fafsa.ed.gov
