Rants & Raves

This is only my second quarter at SCC, but already I have become vey aware of how incredible the film department is. I've had classes with Tony Doupe, Ruth Gregory, and Kris Boustedt, and I can honestly say it's been an honor to work with all of them. They are each very caring, understanding mentors who put their students first. They listen to ideas and give honest feedback (something that is very important in this industry) and never stifle a student's creativity, instead taking the time to explain why something does or does not work. This is how a teacher should be: a hardworking individual who truly cares about the minds they are molding. I plan on staying in touch with all of them, even after I leave Shoreline. So, here's to you, Tony, Ruth and Kris. This is one student who has been truly inspired by you. Thank you.

I am so grateful to have gotten into my math teacher's night class. She is nothing short of amazing. She is so kindhearted, soft-spoken and always available. She takes her time teaching math to me, and to my classmates, without rushing and being condescending. She allows us to come to class two hours early so that we can go over homework questions and answers. If anyone has ever "suffered" from math anxiety please consider Phyllis Topham as your math teacher. She is very intelligent, and I have learned a lot from her. Also, did I mention she always has Oreo cookies at the end of her desk?

I moved here from Arkansas and wasted a lot of my years trying to figure out what it was that I wanted to do with my life. After a couple of certificates later from "colleges" (which shall remain nameless) that led me to either changing bed pans or doing oral exams and cleanings (ick!), I grew tired of little respect, from being at the bottom of the medical totem pole. There was no opportunity for me to grow in my field and I knew that I was destined for something bigger. Unfortunately, I was just lured into the wrong schools. I was finally referred to Shoreline Community College and what a wonderful experience it has been so far! Thanks to the registration office, the financial aid counselors and, of course, my teachers.

Rant

Here's what really bugs me: the lack of contribution from the students in almost every class. Back in high school, students would at least try to provide some input. Here, students seem to be more hesitant to share their knowledge. It's as if they think the rest of the class is judging them, but that's simply not true. They could be asking or saying something the rest of the class is too nervous to ask. I've been in a class where a teacher would wait up to a minute in awkward silence for someone to answer a question, to no avail. This leads to a very boring and awkward class with a lot of wasted time. The teachers can't always do it by themselves; every extra bit of info can help the professor as well as the rest of the class. So come on everybody, do your part.

I take the bus everywhere, but at night, riding the bus suddenly turns into the great kinetic vision test. I'm not joking. I mean…it's too freaking dark to find a bus stop! To make matters worse, the bus driver never mentions a bus stop. The driver just keeps going and going and going without saying a word, until I realize that it's too late. I hurriedly pull down the cord, but the bus can't stop suddenly. Obviously. I always end up getting off at the bus stop next to where I am supposed to get off and am forced to walk back to that stop. The driver should at least announce the stops.

Rant

Has anyone else noticed the sick policies that professors have? The idea of having no makeup tests is good for students who procrastinated and didn't study. But what about students who are actually very sick? Going to school sick is physically and mentally exhausting. Most of the time you're not mentally all there, which can drastically alter your testing potential and place the students around you at risk of catching your illness. I know that it's tough for teachers to tell who is actually sick, but I think there must be an alternative to the way things are done now. I guess the best would be 100 percent honesty from students, but we all know that's not going to happen.

Rant

If members of my class are anywhere near a computer during class time, the first thing they do is go on Facebook. Come on! Didn't you just check your Facebook probably the second before you left your house? Nobody has messaged you since then. And if they did, I think you can wait until after class before you respond. I don't know if it's just me, but I'm paying $5,000-$6,000 for each class. I'm sure in hell not going to waste my time wondering why someone just posted that their toes feel weird.
