Shoreline Tennis Season strides forward

Nearing the middle of the tennis season, the men's team and the women's team at Shoreline Community College are on seemingly two different paths. Although the men's team is carrying a perfect record through the end of April, the women's team is still struggling with numbers, oftentimes playing with only two or three women.

The Seattle weather took the upperhand in the first match of the season, canceling the contest against Green River due to rain. An undaunted SCC entered their next match, which would be their first, against Skagit Valley Community College. With SVCC being the defending men's NWAACC champions, SCC had their hands full. As mentioned previously, the men are on a tear and handled SVCC 6-3, whereas the women fell by a score of 9-0. The men defeated SVCC one week later, by the same score of 6-3.

Next on the list: Bellevue Community College. The SCC women dropped the match 9-0 to an extremely strong BCC team.

“The women's team is getting better,” said head coach Eric Moujtahid Webster. “the problem is the two teams they've faced; BCC, and two times against SVCC, both of which are perrenial front-runners. The women's team is also limited by the number of players available for matches,” added Webster.

BCC is defending their women's championship from the 2005 season, but both SVCC and BCC “have really good depth,” says Webster.

As for the men, number one singles James Robinson is still undefeated, having thus far dropped not a single set to any opponet he has faced. Robinson is also one of the only sophmores to return to the team after placing third at last year's NWAACC championships.

“Commendations should go to Normal Frey, the 'senior' member on the team, and probably the oldest competitor in the NWAACC, or the country for that matter,” joked Webster. “He won't divulge into his age but he is older than I am.”
