Present Perfect

 

Use present perfect for events that started in the past and continue to now.

We often use for or since.

for = How long?

I have lived here for 5 years.

We have studied English for 6 months.

He has had a cold for a day.

since = When did it start?

I have lived here since 2004.

We have studied English since September.

He has had a cold since Tuesday.

 

Choose for or since.

 1.

My parents have lived in Seattle ___________ June.

 2.

My parents have lived in Seattle _________ 1 year.
    a.for
    b.since

 3.

I have had my computer _________ 2007.
    a.for
    b.since

 4.

I have had my computer __________ 2 years.
    a.for
    b.since

 5.

I have practiced yoga ___________ a long time.
    a.for
    b.since

 6.

I have practiced yoga __________ I was a teen-ager.
    a.for
    b.since

Use simple past or present perfect.

If the event began and ended in the past, use simple past.

If the event began in the past and continues to now, use present perfect.

Be careful with have / has.

 1.

I _________________ (have) my bike for 3 months.

 2.

I _____________ (buy) my bike 3 months ago.

 3.

He _____________ (start) to study English last year.

 4.

He ________________ (study) English for a year.

 5.

I _______________ (play) soccer when I was a child, but I don't play anymore.

 6.

I _________________ (play) soccer since I was a child. I still play a couple times a week.

 7.

She _______________ (live) in California for many years (1995-2004).

 8.

She _______________ (live) in California for many years. She enjoys living there.

 9.

When I was a child, I _____________ (watch) a lot of TV, but now that I'm an adult, I read a lot.

 10.

I ______________ (watch) TV since I got home.

 11.

In high school, I ____________ (have) to study a lot. Now I don't study so much.

 12.
