Gidget Terpstra was appointed to the
Board of Trustees at Shoreline Community
College in July, 2004. Terpstra is currently
the Readiness to Learn Family (RTL) Advocate
for Parkwood Elementary School and the
District Homeless Education Liaison for the
Shoreline Public School District. In both
positions, she ensures that the non-academic
needs of students and families are met. She
received the Washington Award for Excellence
in Education in 1999, awarded by the
Washington State Governor and the State
Superintendent of Public Instruction for her
RTL work with Kellogg Middle School and
Shorecrest High School. Terpstra served as a
trustee on the Shoreline Public Schools
Foundation from 1994 until 2003, two years
of which she was secretary. She has also
been active in community organizations such
as local PTAs and the district council PTA,
Camp Fire Girls, North Urban Human Services
Alliance, Northshore/Shoreline Community
Health & Safety Network, and Shoreline Youth
Summits. Terpstra and her husband, Dennis
have lived in Shoreline for over 30 years
and have two children. She recently served
on the Advisory Board to the SCC FACES
Project, a federally-funded research project
to examine the means by which colleges
provide training to new immigrant
communities and incorporate diversity issues
into their curricula.
